Ok, what kind of a whiz bang brain do you have? Solve the five puzzle sets below and you might just win the brain of the year award.
Don’t share you answers!! You want to be THE one winner.
Leave entries with Ms. Prior.

MAY GAMES:
Ok all you brainiacs. This is the LAST game page of my library career. So sharpen your pencils AND your wits, (if you still have them) and show South what you can do. As always, if you need the answers, you can email me.

1. Three men were standing in a row, all facing the same direction, so that there was one in back who could see the two in front of him, one in the middle, and one in front who could not see either of the other two. There were three blue and two red hats. One hat was placed on each man, without them seeing which two were left over. Each man was told the total number of each color of hat. First the man in the back was asked if he could deduce what color hat he had on, but he said he couldn't. Neither could the man in the middle, when he was next asked. But then man in the front, who could see neither of those behind him but could hear their answers, correctly deduced by logic what color hat he was wearing. What color was it and why?

2.  Three men each paid $10 to share a $30 hotel room. Later, the manager felt bad about overcharging them for a $25 dollar room, so he gave the bellboy 5 one-dollar bills to return to them. The bellboy returned one dollar to each of the men, but kept two for himself. So the men paid $27 for the room, plus $2 to the bellboy for a total of $29. Where did the extra dollar go?

3.  How many times a day do the hour and minute hands on a clock line up exactly with each other?

4. What is being described in this riddle?

         When I am filled,

         I can point the way.

         When I am empty,

         Nothing moves me.

5.  Figure out the six-letter word that completes the title of this puzzle. You'll find all six letters by solving the sentences below.

  1. This letter is in cable and babe but not in tread.

  2. This letter is in irony and train but not in nimble.

  3. This letter is in avocado and vacant but not in visit.

  4. This letter is in chair and rail but not in camera.

  5. This letter is in night and thinkerbut not in thick.

  6. This letter is in xylophone and yellow but not in allowance
What is the six-letter word that you uncovered? _ _ _ _ _ _

6.  Here is a set of letters that makes no sense:

umboet

If you insert a j at the beginning of the set and then insert a word space and another j within the set, you will get a two-word phrase that is an English expression: jumbo jet

Figure out the letter that, used twice (once after a word space), will make a two-word English expression out of each of the following sets of letters.

  1. erriblewos
  2. tudykills
  3. astood
  4. oubleate
  5. ogays

7. A catering company sells large containers of iced tea and large containers of fruit juice. Right now the company has six containers, each holding the following amounts:

Container A: 30 quarts

Container B: 32 quarts

Container C: 36 quarts

Container D: 38 quarts

Container E: 40 quarts

Container F: 62 quarts

Five of the containers hold iced tea, and one container holds fruit juice.

Two customers come into the shop. The first customer buys two containers of iced tea. The second customer buys twice as much tea as the first customer. Which container is holding the fruit juice

8. Of the first 42 presidents of the United States, there is one whose name can spell an ordinary English word if the letters are rearranged.

Who is that president, and what is the word? (It's fair to use an encyclopedia to look up the names of the first 42 presidents)

9.  What is the largest number you can express in Roman numerals if you have one each of the following letters? (NOTE: You cannot use any of the letters as powers or exponents.)

C   D   I   L   M   V   X

10. "Madam, I'm Adam."

What's strange about this sentence? Try reading it backwards. It reads the same way forwards and backwards. A word, phrase, or sentence that reads the same forwards or backwards is called a palindrome.

For example the word wow is a palindrome. See how many three-letter words you can think of that are palindromes. Try for ten. Then see if you can think of at least one four-letter and one five-letter palindrome.

Keith doesn't care for animals that have spots. Mia disagrees with both Dan and Keith. Which is each kid's favorite animal?

The Barbershop Puzzle

A traveler arrives in a small town and decides he wants to get a haircut. According to the manager of the hotel where he's staying, there are only two barbershops in town — one on East Street and one on West Street. The traveler goes to check out both shops. The East Street barbershop is a mess, and the barber has the worst haircut the traveler has ever seen. The West Street barbershop is neat and clean; its barber's hair looks as good as a movie star's.

Which barbershop does the traveler go to for his haircut, and why?
