MARCH: Christian Fiction Popular

As a new librarian I am always learning about new authors or genre to include in the South library. This year I became aware of two highly popular authors who write in the Christian genre.

Beverly Lewis is known for writing about the Amish. Many of her books would be categorized as historical. Her Abram’s Daughters series deals with the Old Order Amish in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The series is set against post-World War II and covers three generations.  The library has purchased this series and it should be on the shelves by the end of the month. (See Alysia Mota’s review below.)

The other author being highlighted is Karen Kingsbury.  She sent us two copies of her latest book, A Thousand Tomorrows (see Karen Potteet’s review below).
Karen writes in the contemporary romance category. She specializes in “life-changing” fiction.

The genre categories in Christian fiction run the gamut from romance to Black literature, mystery and suspense, science fiction, romance, and American historical.

The most famous writer in the Christian genre is C.S. Lewis. The South High Library has 14 editions of his writings.

A Thousand Tomorrows
Karen Kingsbury
Review by Karen Poteete
This is a wonderful story of hope and love. The story is about a young girl who barrel races on the professional rodeo circuit and gets noticed by a young, extremely good looking and talented bull rider. She notices him too, but is quick to avoid him as she has a secret she can not tell. He is persistent in his pursuit and eventually they begin talking and fall in love.
She finally tells her secret and their lives change forever. What does not change is the unconditional love he has for her regardless of her situation.
You will cheer, cry and get mad as you read this book. I read the book in two days as it is such a story of love and redemption.
I highly recommend it to anyone who likes a good love story.

The Crossroads
Beverly Lewis
Reviewed by Alysia Mota
Beverly Lewis, born in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country, fondly recalls her growing-up years. A keen interest in her mother’s Plain family heritage has led Beverly to set many of her popular stories in Lancaster County.
In The Crossroad there is a young Plain (Amish) woman who has become blind after a horrible accident that has also claimed the life of her husband and son. The only other survivor is her daughter. She now lives with her parents who own a bed and breakfast.
One day a handsome journalist comes to stay at the B&B and do a story on the Plain people. The journalist and the Plain woman gradually become attracted to each other. From New York the journalist tries to find a cure for the blindness and the young woman prays that the Lord will heal her.
This story has an amazing amount of detail about the Plain heritage and describes things in such a beautiful manner. While reading you will feel like you are right in Lancaster County. It is a great story of faith and love! I couldn’t put it down.

Café on the Nile
By Bartle Bull
This is a great thriller set in 1935 Cairo, Egypt and Ethiopia.
From Amazon.com:
The owner, Olivio, is a dwarf from Goa, and his regular customers include a stalwart British professional hunter, his unfaithful wife and her lover, an Italian aviator, American twin sisters in search of all kinds of adventure, and various rogue Germans, including a doctor who regrets not being able to use Olivio for medical research.”
If you like adventure, you will love this book!!

Three Cups of Tea
 by Greg Mortensen
This book has already been making the rounds here at South. If you haven’t heard of it, you should definitely take a look.
Mortensen is an amazing man doing an almost impossible job of providing schools for the people in the farthest reaches of the Himalayas and Afghanistan.

His journey began when he was lost in the mountains after a failed attempt at climbing K2. A village saved his life and began his journey to provide schools for the small villages ignored by their governments.

His is a story of inspiration and hope.
